Old Pulteney 12

IMG_1778 Continuing to explore whiskeys for under $50, we sampled a whiskey from the most northern point of Scotland. Old Pulteney was established in 1826 in the town of Wick.  Their website is full of historical facts about their region and town – One being how Wick was originally settled by vikings. The first thing we noticed about the Old Pulteney 12 is the detail of the bottle. Its unique labels have a traditional appearance. But take a deeper look and you’ll see how they create a dimensional oceanic scene, complete with rolling waves, birds and ships. This vivid amber 12 year old whiskey has an intense floral mix on the nose and a wonderfully raw mouth feel. The palate is a coalescence of caramel, herbs, sea salt and ammaretto. This layered, old world style whiskey is an automatic buy at $37.  Locally available. Rating: 88/100
