Springbank Distillery is the oldest family owned distillery in Scotland. Since being founded in 1828, 100% of the traditional floor malting, maturation and bottling is done on site at the Springbank distillery. All of their whisky is non-chill filtered and no artificial colorings or flavors are added. They have a regular line up of 10, 12, 15 and 18 year old single malts but we were able to get our hands on a special bottling of a 14 year old cask strength. With this fervid whisky, complexity is the prevalent theme. The nose is heavy with an earthy, wet, rainforest type floral quality. The palate adds intensive mint, pine, melon, banana and honeyed apples. The finish has a bit of chili pepper spice with brine, closing with a energetic, lasting warmth. This single malt has got a lot of everything going on, from floral notes to sweet fruitiness, then to a full, spicy bite. This particular bottling is in non-continuing production so once the local stock runs out, it will be gone for good. Locally available for $90. Rating: 92/100.
