When the Kentucky Derby approaches each year, BWG always takes the opportunity to partake in the obligatory consumption of whiskey via the Kentucky Derby’s official drink, The Mint Julep. Most often we construct our mint juleps with Woodford Reserve bourbon. However, to spice things up we’ve decided to toss tradition aside this year and use one of our favorite American craft whiskies, Breckenridge Bourbon.
The Classic Mint Julep
Ingredients: Mint leaves | 1/2 oz. simple syrup | 2 1/2 oz. Breckenridge Bourbon (or more traditionally with Woodford Reserve) | Mint sprig for garnish
Directions: Place 4-8 mint leaves (depending on size) into a julep glass with the simple syrup and gently muddle. Add bourbon, fill glass with crushed ice and stir for 30 seconds. Add mint sprig, enjoy.
The classic mint julep is a fun, easy-style whiskey cocktail (plus it just looks damn cool in the nickel, or copper plated julep cups). Its quality rises or lowers almost solely based on the caliber of bourbon. We love the Colorado made Breckenridge Bourbon because of its fruity and etherial flavor qualities which pair very well with mint. Try this mint julep recipe for your derby party and let us know what you think, cheers!
