One of our favorite whiskies is Kilchoman Machir Bay 2012. We love the balanced flavors of fresh autumn leaves and peat smoke. You can read our full review on that whisky here. Kilchoman, one of the newer Islay distilleries, releases annual bottlings of their core range Machir Bay series and we recently sampled the 2013 version. Unfortunately the 2013 falls a few notches short of the 2012. The base floral and peat smoke flavors remain intact, but they give off a slightly stunted effect when compaired side by side with the 2012. The Machir Bay 2013 is still a good whisky, but it lacks the flavor punch and overall balance and depth of the 2012. That being stated, the 2013 is the most readily available Machir Bay bottling in the states. Each year’s edition is in itself a limited release, so having the 2013 version is inarguably better than having no Machir Bay at all. The 2013 is a very solid buy, but if one comes across a left over bottle of the 2012, jump on that like its the last bottle on earth… Kilchoman Machir Bay 2013 is locally available at Gates Circle Liquors for $60. Rating: 89/100.
