Buffalo Distilling Co.

IMG_6904BWG is extremely excited to announce that Buffalo Distilling Company has launched the first bourbon ever made in Buffalo NY and it’s now available for retail purchase.IMG_6948BWG stopped by BDC this past weekend to meet the guys behind Buffalo’s newest distillery and of course, to drink their bourbon. We arrived to BDC’s modest digs while they were in the process of labeling and packaging their whiskey bottles for their export into local stores. Right now, BDC is located east of the city in Alden NY,  but plans are in the works for them to move into The Larkin District downtown by early next year.IMG_6920

IMG_6910They use a 250 gallon single pot still and double distill their bourbon from their original recipe. For aging, they are using smaller, 10 and 15 gallon charred white oak barrels. The first batch has been aged for 3.5 months, has a mash bill of 70% corn, 15% rye and 15% malted barley and clocks in at 40% abv.IMG_6955

IMG_6939BDC bottles their spirits under the title One Foot Cock. The first batch of their One Foot Cock Bourbon Whiskey is initially very bright and grainy – representative of its short time aging. This whiskey is definitely young and raw… but in a good way. The nose has some floral honeysuckle notes, with a very pleasant and distinct corn-on-the-cob type sweetness. The palate continues with these flavors adding some light oak. It finishes nice, long and warm. There is nothing offensive about this bourbon – it’s absolutely drinkable from nose to finish. We cannot wait to continually try One Foot Cock Bourbon batches as BDC grows and adjusts their process, as well as they are able to let the spirit age for longer and longer periods of time.IMG_6937In the meantime, One Foot Cock Bourbon Whiskey Batch #1 is an excellent starting point as the first ever Buffalo made bourbon whiskey.

Locally available at Gates Circle Liquors for $50. Rating 86/100.
