BWG’s 2013 Whiskey of the Year

IMG_4206To decide on our our 2013 Whiskey of the Year, we picked the four locally available whiskies from 2013 that we rated highest and sampled them, side by side. They consisted of Ardbeg’s 2013 special release, Ardbog. BWG’s “holiday must buy” whiskey, Balcones Texas Single Malt, Kilchoman Machir Bay 2013 and Corsair Triple Smoke. All of these whiskies are excellent and very different from each other. Earlier this year we reviewed the Kilchoman Machir Bay 2012, which was simply incredible and remains one of our favorite whiskies ever. The same goes for Ardbeg’s 2012 special release, Galileo, which we can’t recommend highly enough. But for us, this year’s offerings from both distilleries fell just a bit short when compared side by side with others. In our review, The Young Americans Pt. 2 we featured Corsair’s highly rated Triple Smoke, which we loved, but once more, when we compared side by side with Balcones Texas Single Malt, our 2013 Whiskey of the Year became obvious.IMG_BALCSo balanced, so full of flavors and so drinkable, Balcones Texas Single Malt stands alone at the top. Its complex, creamy, savory, cheery pie, nail polish, roasted cedar plank and dark brown sugar nose, along with its verbose, sweet and spicy, mint julep, brown sugar-dusted and smoked white-oak palate, mixed with its strong, warm, toasty finish, make the Balcones Texas Single Malt BWG’s 2013 Whiskey of the Year.
